South African Diamonds Sector Value-Addition Strategy
Development of strategic plan for development of the downstream diamond industry in South Africa. Kaiser identified which parts of the value chain (mining, trading, cutting and polishing, retail and tourism) SA should focus on (to which markets) as well as defining cross-stakeholder interventions for Business, Government and Labour. Recommendations related to technology, access to rough, training, VAT and $-accounts. The study results also fed into new policy and legislation being prepared by Treasury and Department Minerals and Energy aimed at encouraging the industry to move further downstream.


Tourism Sector Review
Strategic evaluation of tourism projects in local municipalities for which the Development Bank of South Africa (DBSA) had provided financial support. The assessment focused on the relevance, efficiency and developmental impact of DBSA support to local municipalities as well as provided the basis for recommendations regarding adjustments to DBSA support for tourism in local areas.


Western Cape Craft Sector Strategy
Development of an export-led sector development strategy for the Western Cape Crafts Sector. This project included profiling the Western Cape crafts sector, and assessing current interventions. Resulted in a series of recommendations on products and markets as well as recommendations on the most appropriate role for provincial government in developing the sector.


Chemicals Sector Support Strategies
Development of strategies to effectively implement support mechanisms to the Chemicals sector, as agreed at the sector Growth and Development Summit (GDS). Key areas addressed in the project included: recommendations to improve government support mechanisms and investment incentives across the innovation process chain; strategies to expand information provision to the sector; and an assessment of market opportunities for the South African chemicals sector in US and EU polypropylene markets.


Chilli Value Chain Analysis
Analysis of the production and processing opportunities for chillies in the KwaZulu-Natal province as part of attempts to rejuvenate the agricultural and agro-processing sectors in the province. The project involved global market and competitor analysis, identification of KZN's comparative advantages, and identification of up and downstream opportunities, based on an analysis of the chilli value chain through growing, intermediate processing, final product processing, trading and retailing.


Floriculture Cluster Development Study
Development of an export-led growth strategy for the South African Floriculture industry, built around key regional clusters, to support a national development imperative to expand the country's labour-intensive agricultural sectors. Key outputs of the project included the development of an airfreight logistics solution, a support framework for emergent farmers entering the industry, streamlining of current industry organisations and improving linkages within the industry, and establishing a support services group for the sector.


KwaZulu-Natal ICT and Electronics Cluster Development
Research, analysis and strategy development for the ICT and Electronics sectors in KwaZulu-Natal. Involved setting up an ICT forum to discuss potential cluster initiatives, and developing a strategic framework and vision for the cluster. The project also identified key cluster initiatives and developed an action plan for implementation.


Capital Equipment Cluster Revitalisation Strategy
High-level assessment of past clustering initiatives and development of strategic recommendations on alternatives to stimulate new clustering activity in the mining and capital equipment sectors.


Jewellery Industry Cluster Study
Development of a growth strategy and implementation plan for the creation of a world-class South African jewellery export industry, built on a series of local clusters and focused on beneficiation and expanding export capability. Key cross-stakeholder interventions were designed around financing, branding, design, training and industry organisation.


Mpumalanga Food Technology Centre Business Plan
Feasibility study for the establishment of a food technology centre for the Lowveld region of Mpumalanga, as part of a provincial agro-processing cluster initiative. This project included an assessment of agro-processing supply and demand, both domestically and globally, the benchmarking of other food technology centres, and the identification of user needs in order to determine the nature of the facility. Key outputs included a financial feasibility assessment and the development of a business plan for the facility.


Saron Tourism Development Framework
Drafting of a tourism development framework for the community of Saron, Drakenstein Municipality. The framework included the identification of the major tourism products in Saron, as well as an implementation plan. Extensive public participation processes were also an essential element of the research process.


SATI Responsible Tourism Training
Development and implementation of training programme and associated training materials in responsible tourism development for tourism officials in local and provincial government, based on a needs assessment conducted for Gauteng Tourism Authority and training needs review undertaken by the South African Local Government Association. The project included training of lecturers from seven higher education institutions throughout South Africa (train-the-trainer), on-going support during the roll-out of the training and quality assurance at delivery sites.
