World Bank / Cities Alliance LED Initiative
Benchmarking study and toolkit development to help cities increase inclusion of local economic development components in the framework of City Development Strategies. Based on the experiences of 15 cities and city-regions around the world in assessing their urban competitiveness, within local economic development strategies. The study involved understanding the tools and techniques used by cities to analyse their competitiveness, and the ways in which these competitiveness assessments are used to develop LED strategies. A toolkit was developed to enable cities in developing countries to learn from best practices identified in the study and to have a framework for conducting their own assessments.

Dube TradePort Trade Zone Strategy and Feasibility
Development of strategic plan of the trade zone (industrial park) proposed for the new Durban Airport. As overall project lead Kaiser was responsible for developing strategies and conducting high level feasibility on cargo facilities, a perishables centre, other support ventures, and Cyberport (IT connectivity and value-added services).

Mandela Bay Urban Renewal Support
Development of a tourism strategy for the Nelson Mandela Metro (Eastern Cape), as part of a focus on tourism development in the metro. As a member of a consortium of companies, Kaiser's role focused on conducting a market assessment and facility supply analysis for the metro.

Newcastle Regional Airport Regeneration
Viability analysis to determine the potential to upgrade the municipal airport to achieve status as a CAA licensed regional airport in order to enable it to establish regional air services for regular and charter tourism flights. The project focused on economic assessment of potential market, analysis of airport infrastructure and upgrade requirements, and socio-economic cost / benefit of proposed capital investment and ongoing operating costs. Output of study included development of strategic and institutional plan for airport, with an emphasis of introducing private sector participation (PSP) into the municipality-owned airport.

Western Cape Strategic Infrastructure Plan
Identification of key infrastructure requirements for the province, in particular those with the potential to have a catalytic effect on provincial economic growth. Kaiser participated in a consulting team supporting the provincial government. A model was used to assess projects against key criteria in order to identify high priority and "iconic" projects.

East London IDZ Investment Environment Comparative Analysis
Benchmarking and review of the investment environment for East London's Industrial Development Zone (IDZ). This project involved a comparative assessment of investment environment across South African Industrial Development Zones and comparable Export Processing Zones, Special Economic Zones etc. in emerging markets. Key outputs of study included a gap assessment, recommendations and development of summary for communication to potential investors.

Mpumalanga Food Technology Centre Business Plan
Feasibility study for the establishment of a food technology centre for the Lowveld region of Mpumalanga, as part of a provincial agro-processing cluster initiative. This involved an assessment of agro-processing supply and demand, both domestically and globally, the benchmarking of other food technology centres, identifying user needs in order to determine the nature of the facility, a financial feasibility assessment and a business plan.

Dubai Flower and Perishables Centre Free Zone Feasibility and Strategy
Concept development, feasibility assessment and business plan for the development of a perishables logistics and trading hub (and special economic zone) in Dubai. Aim of project was to leverage Dubai's location and logistics infrastructure to establish it as a new trading hub for flowers, fruits/vegetables and fish being shipped between Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Project covered all aspects of strategic planning and techno-economic feasibility and oversight of masterplanning.
